On Friday November 1 during the Pre-Social Hour, Ashby Village guests are invited to peruse a contemporary version of artist Judy Chicago’s renowned Dinner Party exhibition from the 1970’s that honored famous women with individually designed place settings. https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/dinner_party. Created by members of Albany’s Impromptu No Tutu ensemble, this project was inspired by a visit to the original work now housed at the Brooklyn Museum.

In addition, Impromptu No Tutu will invite guests to enjoy some easy social movement with music in celebration of “Phenomenal Women” in our lives. Guests will experience the warmth and relaxed pleasure of moving in community that are hallmarks of the No Tutus.

Impromptu No Tutu are core members of creative aging specialist Greacian Goeke’s FREE TO MOVE class at Albany Senior Center (Fridays, 10:15 am). Impromptu No Tutu is dedicated to promoting movement as a joyous, expressive language accessible to all. It bridges when words fail. "We believe that exercising creativity is the primary source of health on all levels. We travel throughout the Bay Area and beyond to offer participatory movement experiences to all ages, dissolving stereotypes and defying expectations of the expressive power of aging bodies."

New members are always welcome!   “All you need is a curiosity to move,” Greacian says, “No special ability. Move as you are is my motto.”

Greacian Goeke is a certified Orff Schulwerk movement and music educator who has worked as a teaching artist with all ages since 1989. She has taught in venues from elementary and preschool to university, in senior communities, music schools and even the San Francisco city dump! In 2008 she founded the exuberant Impromptu No Tutu elder ensemble to show the world what dance in later life can be. She also collaborates with the USF Dance Generators, an intergenerational dance company, and teaches T’ai Chi in and out of doors in the East Bay. She received the Community-Engaged Practice Award from California College of the Arts and is a member of the Dance Educators Leadership Institute at Luna Dance in Berkeley.
