Gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom has committed himself to some form of universal healthcare for Californians should he be elected, and California could provide a model for the nation.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) cut the number of uninsured in California in half, but 3 million Californians remain uninsured, including 2 million who are ineligible for health insurance due to their immigration status.

Is universal health insurance coverage for all California residents possible?

Join Richard Scheffler, Distinguished Professor of Health Economics and Public Policy at UC Berkeley, for a lively discussion on how California can change its healthcare system in ways that improve health outcomes, reduce costs, and create the savings necessary to provide health insurance for all Californians.

Richard M. Scheffler, PhD is an internationally recognized health economist and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Health Economics and Public Policy in the Goldman School of Public Policy and School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the director of the Nicholas C. Petris Center on Health Care Markets and Consumer Welfare, which focuses on consumer protection, affordability, and access to health care. Professor Scheffler is also the Emeritus Chair in Healthcare Markets, endowed by the Attorney General for the State of California and co-chair of the Berkeley Forum for Improving California’s Healthcare Delivery System.

Professor Scheffler has worked and advised on health policy issues nationally and internationally. He has been a consultant for the World Bank, WHO, and OECD.

Join us for what promises to be an important prelude to a discussion that is sure to engage us all in the very near future.

Suggested $10 donation for guests who are not Ashby Village members or volunteers

ACCESSIBILITY NOTE:

If you use a wheelchair or cannot manage steps, there is an entrance to the City Club for disabled people.  Find the front door, then go to the left to the end of the building. You will see a steel door with grating on it and a sign that says “Use Intercom to summon staff person who will assist you to the Lobby”. A few feet back from the door and a little to the left is a silver pole about waist high with a box on it that has a button and a speaker. Push the button. The door will open. This is done remotely by the front desk.

If no one appears to assist you, go through the door. You will find yourself in the basement. Follow the signs to the elevator, which will bring you up to the first floor virtually in front of the drawing room where our Ashby Village event will be. If the front desk is busy, you may have to do this trip through the basement just yourself.
