This film is a rare viewing opportunity.  It was made by Galina Mshanskaya in 1996 for Russian television as a tribute to Russia's beloved dancer Yuri Soloviev.  He along with his friends, Rudolf Nureyev, and Mikhail Baryshnikov were regarded as the greatest Russian male ballet dancers of their generation.  Soloviev was a hero in Russia. His leaps were so high and he appeared to pause a bit in the air leading to his affectionately being nicknamed the "cosmonaut" and being compared to the astronaut Yuri Gagarin.  But because he didn't defect, he remains unknown in the west outside of dance circles. He also never got to expand his talents, but instead was required to repeat his stunning roles over and over endlessly until he finally ended his life.  This documentary gives us the opportunity to see this classic dancer at the peak of his skills and also gives us a glimpse into another world.  The basic structure of this documentary is similar to traditional documentaries, however, it is obviously from a very different culture; its tone is reverential and emotional rather than objective.

Important note:  We have become aware that some of our attendees have serious reactions to perfumes and popcorn - yes, popcorn. We ask all attendees to respect these issues and leave perfumes and popcorn at home. We have limited seating, so for your comfort, please RSVP to Mary.

If you are interested in bringing a snack to share with others, feel free to do so. Thank you.
