Science and Ideas Group
The Internet, Attention, Inevitable Inequality,
and the Rise of the Anti-Fact, Anti-Science Juggernaut

Just about everyone has heard that social media—Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and many more—lead to new evils in our political, social, work and even personal lives. Michael Goldhaber will try to explain why. Basic to the argument is that the Internet in general facilitates what amounts to a new kind of economy. We naively think of economies as basically having to do with money and goods, but there is a more fundamental way to look at them. We are increasingly plunged into an economy in which what is scarce and desirable and knits the world together is human attention. He’ll show how it works and why it threatens to lead to all manner of ills, as well as offering some hope.

Michael H. Goldhaber has a doctorate in theoretical physics but long ago began focusing on the social effect of science and technology. In the 1990's that led him to develop a theory of what he called “The Attention Economy.” It predicted many current ills, such as those that led to the US Capitol invasion on January 6.
