REDWOOD REGIONAL PARK, EAST RIDGE: EASY,
WITH MORE CHALLENGING OPTIONS
Description: Easy to moderately challenging, depending on your speed and the trails selected.
Redwood park is a great park with lots of beautiful trails. The East Ridge Trail is a wide dirt road which gently undulates through tall Monterey pines, oak and madrone woodlands, chaparral, and eucalyptus (on the longer option). You can see Mt. Diablo to the east at breaks in the trees.
Where to meet: We will meet in the parking lot at The Skyline Gate to Redwood Regional Park, 8490 Skyline Blvd, Oakland, CA. There is an accessible toilet there.
What to bring: Binoculars if you have them, good hiking shoes or boots for the trails, layered clothing for variable weather, water, windbreaker, snacks. Hiking poles are optional, but a good idea for the longer options.
Directions: Drive south on Hwy 13 (toward Hayward). Exit Right at Park Blvd and turn Left at the traffic light (Park Blvd). Cross over the overpass, and turn Left again on Mountain Blvd. At the 2nd traffic light turn Right onto Snake Rd. After 0.2 miles, proceed straight ahead on curvy Shepherd Canyon Rd. for approximately 2 miles (Snake turns abruptly left: don’t follow it). Turn Right at Skyline Drive. After about 0.3 miles, turn Left into the parking lot at the Skyline Gate Parking lot, 8490 Skyline Blvd, Oakland, CA.
It should take about 25 minutes to get there from Hwy 80 at University Ave in Berkeley. It’s a popular walk, so if there are no open parking spaces, park on the east side of Skyline Blvd.
