Defunding the Police: Why Now?
A Conversation with Jonathan Simon

Defund? Retrain? Abolish ?

Join us to hear Jonathan Simon, Professor of Criminal Justice at UC Berkeley help us understand the issues and possible solutions to the challenges of Police Reform. Learn more about the history and evolution of policing in America, and don't miss this important and timely event.

Is police reform possible, or do we need a paradigm shift in how we think about police reform and the criminal justice system?

Are we experiencing an overdue opportunity to rethink how we want to protect people’s safety and dignity in our urban and suburban communities in the 21st century?

Dr. Jonathan Simon is the Lance Robbins Professor of Criminal Justice Law and has been on the Berkeley Law faculty since 2003. He teaches in the area of criminal law, criminology, legal studies and the sociology of law. He is the author of numerous books and articles on criminal justice and mass incarceration and is currently the faculty affiliate at the Center for the Study of Law and Society, UC Berkeley School of Law.

“Police departments became part of urban life in the US beginning in the 1840s. Their primary role was maintaining order in cities perceived as threatened by rapid population growth caused by industrialization and immigration. Only in the 20th century did police come to be defined primarily as crime fighters. Since the 1960s, billions have been spent to improve policing in hopes of reducing crime. Current calls to defund the police should be seen against decades of expansion and are a much overdue opportunity to rethink how we want to protect people’s safety and dignity in our urban and suburban communities in the 21st century.” -Jonathan Simon
