K2: The Siren of the Himalayas

(75 min.) in English with occasional small subtitles (the film, however, is so rich in imagery and atmosphere that missing a few words is secondary).

Available on DVD and streaming on Kanopy (free with a library card) and at Apple TV and YouTube for .99.

(Please be sure that the film you rent or borrow has this exact long title.  Do not inadvertently get  the film which is called simply K2 as it is not the one we will be discussing.)

Join us for a gripping, suspenseful documentary of breathtaking beauty that takes us to K2, in the Himalayas. We will accompany three climbers as they set off in 2009 hiking through Pakistan. We will live with them in their various camps along the way as they head up to the summit. The footage they took is intercut with the filmed journal entries of the Duke of Abruzzi's very large, very different expedition to the same place in 1909.

K2 the second highest mountain in the world one of the most dangerous. It moves climbers to such a degree that some of them climb it repeatedly. Each climb takes at least two months and very few actually reach the summit even after repeated tries, but they feel so fully alive there that they keep coming back. The visual beauty, the thrills and the deep inner experience that brings them back are alive and intimate for us to share.
