My Grandpa Leo ~ Laura Donohoe, Ashby Village Volunteer

In the late 1980's, he began to change and our family had some tough learning to do about how to relate to Grandpa and try to help this proud man who didn't take direction Laura Donohoe Grandpa Leofrom others too easy at times. It was frustrating and sad. My Gramma needed us just as much as he did. His temper would flare, he'd say anything that came to his mind no matter what. At times we appreciated the humor he provided without having a normal filter. I think those who have experienced watching their loved ones affected with this disease can understand the need to laugh so you don't cry. Once he could no longer drive, being in the car with him became scary. If I made a turn differently then he would have, he'd threaten to open the door of the moving car to get out. Later, in a lucid  moment, he'd turn to me and say, "I owe you one" and I'd say "no you don't Grandpa, I love you."

I'm walking for my Grandpa Leo.
