Learning from the Past and Planning the Future

Annual Ashby Village Leadership Retreat

As described in the January “Newsletter”, Ashby Village’s organizational leadership continues to mature, with the Board transitioning to serving as a governing body, the Program Leadership Team  (PLT) assuming full oversight of programs and services, as well as the Staff clarifying how they can support the whole.  On Wednesday afternoon March 11, the Board, Staff and PLT came together for a Planning Retreat in the home graciously provided by member/volunteers Liz Raymer and Ronnie Boynton.

Led by facilitator Mariana Moore, the Retreat began with the question "What does aging well mean to you?" As responses were shared, the group found that their responses to aging well as an individual were relevant to how Ashby Village is aging well as an organization…especially as Ashby Village moves toward celebrating its Fifth Anniversary this year July 1, 2015.

Board President Andra Lichtenstein provided a short history of Ashby Village, noting that the original core five-member Board had matured into a Board of 10 - an Executive Committee, and three working committees (Internal Affairs, External Affairs – including Development – and Governance).  Program and services are now under the integrated guidance of the Program Leadership Team, and supported by staff.

Questions were used to frame the challenges now facing Ashby Village, including:

  • How do we grow (both deep and wide) without losing the sense of caring that is the soul of Ashby Village?
  • How do we assure the Board stays knowledgeable, visible, and connected to the day-to-day activities and concerns of members and volunteers?
  • How do we best support the Executive Director and staff, given the tremendous demands on their time and energy?
  • What does it take to keep volunteers motivated, and how do we best leverage their abilities?

The work of the afternoon was  designed to pinpoint what is most important to consider when making decisions about Ashby Village. A draft proposal regarding roles and responsibilities of the Board, PLT, Executive Director and staff was presented by Debbie Meyer and Ari Vared – Board Fellows from the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business. The Retreat concluded with the traditional photos taken to commemorate this annual event.
