Story by Sandra Kramer
Ashby Village’s first 10-Mile Urban Hike was enthusiastically attended in celebration of Ashby Village's 10th anniversary.
Seventeen Village volunteers, members and guests arrived at the San Francisco Ferry Building on Saturday morning, October 12, 2019 and made their way to Sausalito. Walkers’ ages ranged from mid-fifties to early eighties, all spry and ready to walk with back-packs & hiking poles, hats & sunglasses, water & snacks and brimming with the Ashby Village “can do” attitude. Beautiful sunshine blessed the entire trail as the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels performed aerial acrobatics over the Bay to delight and awe all.
The hike began at the Embarcadero, past Fisherman’s Wharf, Aquatic Park, Fort Mason, and the Palace of Fine Arts. The trekkers relaxed for a picnic lunch on the lawn of the Presidio, near the Yoda Fountain at Lucasfilm headquarters. Then up and onward they continued to the San Francisco National Cemetery, Crissy Field, and across the Golden Gate Bridge, ending in Sausalito.
Everyone was ready for refreshments of burgers, margaritas and ice cream along the waterfront before catching the ferry back across the Bay. As the happy hikers relaxed on the boat, they watched the sun set over Marin County. All told, the hike was 10.6 miles with high spirits continuing through the day. Once back to the East Bay, a spectacular sunset of glorious pink and orange skies greeted the weary walkers.
This event was a wonderful opportunity for members and volunteers to chat and get to know one another. They shared their connections and involvement with Ashby Village as well as some of their outside activities in our community. By the end of the day, new friendships were forged. Cheered by all who attended as a success and an all-time favorite event, the 10-Mile Urban Hike will now be an annual activity for Ashby Village members and volunteers.
