Death Café at Ashby Village
The Ashby Village Death Café is a welcoming drop-in space for open, respectful conversation about death / dying, which can lead us to view it as a natural part of life that happens for everyone. Part of an international movement, these gatherings invite people to share their thoughts, feelings, questions, experiences and concerns, or simply listen in a supportive and confidential environment over tea and snacks.
Unlike a grief support group or workshop, Death Café has no set agenda or topic. Conversations are spontaneous and unfold naturally based on what is shared by those attending, and are facilitated by experienced death doulas / educators.
This Death Cafe meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at Ashby Village in the Youth Room, 12-1:30pm. All are welcome.
What is a Death Cafe?
At Death Café gatherings, people “drink tea, eat cake, and talk about death.”
Death Café is an international movement that offers discussions in which death is the main topic. These are NOT support groups or counseling sessions; there are no pre-set objectives, agendas or topics. The discussion goes wherever the people who turned up for it take it.
Death Cafes are always offered:
• On a not-for-profit basis
• In an accessible, respectful and confidential space
• With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action
• Along with snacks and beverages
For more information about the phenomenon of Death Cafés, see their website: deathcafe.com
Why would anyone come to a Death Café?
The purpose of the “Death Café” movement is to help us come to grips with probably the most taboo subject in our culture: death.
In the safe spaces of Death Café gatherings, we can let our hair down, relax, and share. Then, hopefully, we will be less overwhelmed and have fewer fears when we must face end-of-life issues of loved ones or ourselves. Those who have already dealt with the “hard stop” at the end of the lives of loved ones have a chance to share experiences, and those who haven’t can explore their own feelings and concerns.
Death Café discussions are spontaneous and each gathering is unique. They can be profound, fun, cathartic, moving, life-enhancing, surprisingly enjoyable - all in one session...
Bottom line: when we feel safe talking about death and dying, it helps us make the most of our finite lives.
These monthly, in-person Death Café gatherings are sponsored by Ashby Village.
All are welcome!
