When: Wednesday, March 4 12 noon - 2 PM

Where: Meet at the Vista Point circle - 11 Spinnaker Way, Berkeley
Directions below.

Open to: Ashby Village members and volunteers and their guests

AccessibilityAccessible to wheelchairs and walkers if you stay on the perimeter trail to avoid the hilly interior trails. We suggest you have someone join you to accommodate your pace. Benches and restrooms available.

Description: The 1.5 mile Cesar Chavez loop perimeter trail features wild flowers, a beautiful view, a beach and sculpture, an area that is home for burrowing owls, and is good for all skill levels.

When you visit this peninsular park and marina, it’s hard to believe that in the 1950s and ’60s the city of Berkeley operated a garbage dump here and was planning to extend the city 2 miles into the Bay by filling in 2,000 acres of water. Those efforts were thwarted by the Save the Bay movement, which started in 1961 and led to the creation of many parks and trails where development had been planned.

There may be an option for some to take interior trails to the solar calendar and more views to extend the walk distance. We will have walk leaders to accommodate various walking speeds and distances.

Directions and Parking:  Allow time to get there and park so we can start on time! Go to the end of University to the Berkeley Marina, turn right on Marina and then left on Spinnaker Way to the Circle - 11 Spinnaker Way, Berkeley for your navigation setting. Parking and restrooms are available.

What to bring: Good walking shoes, layered clothing for variable weather by the bay (can be breezy), water, windbreaker, hat for sun protection. Walking poles are always a good option for stability, especially on the "inner" trails.

While we each know our own walking ability and limitations, having a cell phone with us is always a good idea. We strive to have walk leaders available for options and encourage walkers to always walk with others for safety.

Transportation: Members can request a ride from the Ashby Village office. Call 510-204-9200, or have a guest bring you, and join you on the walk. Members (after logging on) can see who is coming and may want to arrange for car
pooling.
