WHERE TO MEET: 6500 Broadway, Oakland is the nav setting. You can also plug in North Temescal Picnic Area in your system. Go to the North Parking lot off Broadway. See the map above under Location. Do not go to the Broadway Terrace parking lot.The $5 fee is collected if the kiosk is attended (probably won't be?)
After parking, come down the path to the lake, passing restrooms on your left. We will be visible from the North Picnic area where we have had our AV Picnic.
WHO: Everyone is welcome. Family may still be on holiday break - welcome to bring guests!
DESCRIPTION and ACCESSIBILITY:
Let's walk off some of the holiday calories and start 2026 getting fit! We'll start off on the East Shore trail. The East Shore and West Shore trails loop around the lake. We will walk past the beach, children play areas, and picnic sites around the lake - one mile with only a 22 ft elevation change.. Part of the trail is paved and part is dirt. When walking along the water’s edge, watch for birds, Canadian geese, cormorants, and kingfishers. There are picnic tables and a restroom.
If we have walk leaders, a more challenging option is to return on the Oak Bay Trail (above the West Shore loop with more elevation change). Those who select this option will climb a bit above the lake through some shaded woodland, with a bench at the halfway point that looks out at the hills. This trail is more of a challenge, and has a downslope (and perhaps slippery) ending, as you approach the parking lot, which is best done with hiking poles. We will discuss the options before we start the walk.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS: 6500 Broadway, Oakland is the navigational setting. The Lake is near the intersection of Hwys 24 and 13 in Oakland. From Hwy 24, take the Broadway exit to the park’s north entrance.
WHAT TO BRING: Dress in layers, bring hat, water, sunscreen, binoculars and snack. Some walkers like to have walking poles for balance and stability, esp. on the upper trails. Bring your cell phone, if you have one.
TRANSPORTATION:
Members who need a ride can contact the office for a volunteer driver, who may join us or you may ask a friend or family member to bring you and be your guest.
