Science and Ideas:
34 Years of Community Science
from San Francisco to the World

Presenter: Bart Evans, Assistant Director, Mission Science Workshop

In June 2011 a juvenile gray whale washed up on the beach in Pescadero, likely the victim of a ship strike. A team from Mission Science Workshop recovered and cleaned the bones to create a traveling exhibit that has since visited classrooms across San Francisco and California. Bart Evans will go behind the scenes of this effort and how this DIY approach to community science has since built a global movement.

Bart Evans
Bart Evans has been a teacher and leader at the Mission Science Workshop since 2015, and before that he taught and coordinated programs with community science workshop programs across Northern California. He has extensive experience in farmworker and immigrant communities doing out of the box, community-centered education work. He is an East Bay native and did his undergraduate work at UC Santa Cruz with a focus on the Watsonville community.
