Science Without Tears: Educational Reforms that Work
Presenter: Joan Straumanis, PhD, Philosophy and Andrei Straumanis.
Are chemistry, physics and math called "hard" sciences because they're hard to learn? Calculus and Organic Chemistry are often called "gatekeeper" courses because when students fail them or do poorly, they're prevented from advancing to careers in science and medicine.
This mother and son duo will describe new ways of teaching that make science learning more effective and widely accessible. This talk is timely: The research that supported these innovations and proved their value was all Federally-funded, a resource that we are rapidly losing.
Joan Straumanis, a philosopher of science and logician, supported this research as a program manager at two agencies, the US Department of Education and the National Science Foundation.
Andrei Straumanis, an organic chemist, teaches at the University of Texas, Austin, where thousands of his students have benefitted from these effective techniques.
