Peter Sussman on his book DECCA: The Letters of Jessica Mitford

Peter Sussman, who spent 29 years as an editor at the San Francisco Chronicle, will be talking about his critically acclaimed book Decca: The Letters of Jessica Mitford—newly released in paperback in this country, 19 years after its original hardback publication.

Peter’s book of Mitford's letters chronicles in vivid and intimate detail her life as one of the six famous and unruly daughters of English aristocrat Baron Redesdale, from childhood through her teenage elopement to the Spanish Civil War with Winston Churchill's so-called Red Nephew and her decades as an Oakland civil rights activist and celebrated author. She was the wife of civil rights attorney Robert Treuhaft. Mitford is best known for two memoirs and her 1963 runaway bestseller The American Way of Death, which permanently changed American funeral practices.

Actress Sarah Zehner will join Peter to read from selected letters.

In addition to this work, Peter co-authored Committing Journalism: The Prison Writings of Red Hog with prison writer Dannie Martin, and authored chapters in several other books. He edits a bimonthly poetry feature in the Ashby Village newsletter and is also a photographer whose work has been featured in a large solo exhibit. Peter is married to Ashby Village co-founder Pat Sussman.
