Tilden Park Environmental Center

Jewel Lake Loop Trail

We will meander through a dense riparian zone near Wildcat Creek - a varitable web of many willow and berry vines that are home to songbirds and other creatures of this damp overgrown habitat. Wheelchairs can loop in front of the lake and return by the service road to our starting place. Others will then begin climbing the hillside east of the lake into a spicey scented eucalyptus forest. We see readily here how an invasive species can lay waste to native habitat. After 0.7miles we descend once more onto the green lawn of the Environmental Education Center.

Where to meet:

Outside the front entrance of the Environmental Education Center

Transportation options:
The #67 bus goes to Tilden Park with a stop at the Environmental Center parking lot. Carpools can be arranged if you call the organizer ahead of time.

Directions:

From Interstate 80 take University Ave. east to Oxford Street (at the U.C. campus)Turn left and travel 1.4 miles to Marin Ave.. Turn RIGHT (east) and go 0.2 miles to Spruce Street. Turn LEFT (north) on Spruce and go 0.4 mile, Cross Grizzly Peak Boulevard and take an immediate LEFT on Canyon Drive and descend into Tilden Park. At the bottom of the hill turn LEFT (north) on Central Park Drive and park in the long parking lot for Tilden Nature Area. The trail head (and Environmental Education Center) is at the far north end of this lot.
