Home Safety Assessment Team Member

 

The Ashby Village Home Safety Assessment (HSA) Team is seeking new members. Team members conduct on-site visits to identify and prioritize safety and accessibility concerns in members’ homes. Under the supervision of the HSA Team leader, members will be trained to:

  • Respond to HSA requests from Ashby Village members, determine their concerns, explain the assessment process and schedule in-home assessments
  • Use an established checklist to identify and prioritize safety and accessibility concerns at the home visit
  • Document safety issues, including taking photos or making sketches when appropriate
  • Discuss safety/accessibility issues with the Village member during the home visit
  • Prepare a summary report with recommendations for the Village member
  • Help member contact the Village office for referrals to handypersons or vetted professionals to carry out HSA recommendations
  • Follow-up with members to confirm that safety and accessibility issues have been remedied

Qualifications:

  • Background in the building trades, architecture/home design, disabilities and aging, or building accessibility
  • Excellent communications skills, including ability to establish comfortable interactions with Village members
  • Photo and sketching skills
  • Strong follow-through skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Warmth, humor, enthusiasm, persistence

Time Commitment:

  • Initial training: 3+ hours
  • “Ride-along” home visits: 1.5 hours
  • Actual home assessment visits: 1.5 hours
  • Summary write-ups: 1 hour
